If you work on a laptop, you’re probably hunching. Looking down at a built-in screen all day rounds your shoulders and strains your neck — and the fix costs less than a nice dinner. A laptop stand lifts your screen toward eye level so you sit up straight, and it improves airflow so your machine runs cooler too.
You don’t need to spend much. Under $40 covers sturdy, adjustable stands for the desk and fold-flat ones for travel. Here are the five we’d buy — pair one with an external keyboard and mouse for the full ergonomic win.
How we picked
We looked for stability (no wobble when you type), enough height adjustment to reach eye level, good airflow to keep your laptop cool, and a design that fits 13-to-17-inch machines. We included desk-focused risers and portable fold-flat options, all under $40.
Best overall value
1. Nulaxy Ergonomic Adjustable Laptop Stand
Best for: most people who want a sturdy, adjustable riser for cheap.
This Nulaxy is one of the best-selling laptop stands for good reason: a rock-solid aluminum-alloy build, smooth height and angle adjustment, and a design that holds machines up to 17 inches without wobble. It raises your screen toward eye level, vents heat underneath, and costs about as little as a good stand can.
Best premium aluminum
2. Lamicall Adjustable Laptop Stand
Best for: a sleek, MacBook-style stand that feels more expensive than it is.
If you want something that looks the part next to a MacBook, Lamicall’s aluminum stand delivers — a clean, sturdy design with a wide, stable base and a comfortable typing angle. It’s a small step up in price and finish over the budget risers, and it shows.
Best from a trusted brand
3. Amazon Basics Ergonomic Laptop Stand
Best for: buyers who want simple, reliable, and backed by Amazon.
Amazon Basics does exactly what you’d expect: a sturdy, height-adjustable stand at a fair price with no surprises. It’s ventilated, folds down for storage, and comes with the easy returns and support of buying first-party. A safe, no-fuss choice.
Best for travel
4. RIWUCT Foldable Aluminum Laptop Stand
Best for: anyone who works from cafes, coworking spaces, or the road.
This one folds nearly flat and weighs next to nothing, so it slides into a laptop bag and comes with you. Set it up in seconds at a cafe or hotel desk to get your screen up and your posture right anywhere. A great little travel companion.
Best height range
5. Nulaxy Pull-Out Height Adjustable Stand
Best for: taller users and heavier laptops that need more lift and support.
With a pull-out height mechanism and a 22-pound weight rating, this taller Nulaxy reaches higher than most budget risers and stays planted under bigger machines. It’s the pick if standard stands don’t lift your screen far enough for comfortable eye level.
What to look for
Height & eye level. The goal is the top of your screen at roughly eye level. Taller users need more lift — check the maximum height, not just that it “adjusts.”
Stability. A wobbly stand makes typing miserable. Aluminum builds with a wide base are the sturdiest; avoid flimsy folding wire stands for daily desk use.
Portability vs. sturdiness. Fold-flat stands are great for travel but less rigid; solid risers are steadier for a permanent desk. Pick for your main use.
Keyboard & mouse. Raising your screen means you shouldn’t type on the laptop itself. Plan to add an external keyboard and mouse for a truly ergonomic setup.
The bottom line
For most people, the Nulaxy adjustable stand is the best value — sturdy, adjustable, and cheap. Step up to the Lamicall for looks, grab the Amazon Basics for simplicity, the RIWUCT for travel, or the taller Nulaxy pull-out if you need more height.
Check the current price before you buy — and add an external keyboard for the full posture win.
